Benedictine College student life has undergone a reorganization going into the 2008 school year as Joe Wurtz was hired as the new Dean of Students.  Wurtz will be working side by side with Linda Henry, who was previously the Dean of Students and now has the new title of Vice President of Student Life.

Wurtz is a Benedictine alumni and has previously worked for Benedictine as a residence hall director, student activities director, and as assistant dean of students.  For the past four years, he has been the Dean of Student Life at Christendom College in Virginia.

"It's great to be back," said Wurtz.  "The chance to be back at my alma mater and work again with this group of people and these students was really what brought me back.”

The college had planned to hire additional student life staff this year in order to better serve the growing student body.  When Wurtz expressed interest in returning to Benedictine, Henry said they jumped at the chance to bring him back.

"He's the perfect person for this position," said Henry.  ". . .We could have hired an assistant Dean but we really wanted more than that.  We wanted to provide so much more for the students."

As Dean of Students, Wurtz will concentrate on, among other things, overseeing student activities, student government, campus activities board, campus ministry, and student ambassadors.  Henry's focus will be on residence life, counseling, student health, and dining services.

The goal, however, they said is not to split up responsibilities as much as to provide better services to students.  With the increasing number of students, it was becoming more difficult to give programs, students, and organizations that attention that they deserved.  Henry said that adding Wurtz will allow them to have more time to reach out to students and increase communication.  The reorganization will give them the chance to grow and expand services for the students as well as the opportunity to look at what things they can do better.

"We want to enhance the quality of our services and just have more face time. Being more proactive instead of reactive is the goal," Wurtz said

Henry admitted that the new arrangement is unique, but said that it was the best opportunity to provide for the students.  Henry said that she and Wurtz share similar philosophies and love for the college.  They are excited to be working together and are confident that they will complement each other well.

"We really are a team," said Henry, "That’s what’s exciting.  We’re a team and we support each other.  I think we both have that drive to provide the very best student life program in the country."
