Students to be notified of room draw results in late summer

The room draw process is one that almost all BC students experience at some point. It is the same procedure each spring with randomized number assignments, year precedence and the scramble to find the roommate with the best place in line.

The only change this year is that students will not be certain of next semester’s lodgings until sometime in the summer.
Linda Henry, Vice President of Student Life, was unable to set a date on when students will be notified of next semester’s living situations, but said students could be notified as late as June.

“There are many moving targets,” Henry explained. “Enrollment and retention are unpredictable with the way the economy is, but once we get a better feel for that we will have a more definite answer.”

Despite the small change, some students, like sophomore Billie Jean Quade, do not believe this will make room draw any more efficient since those students getting moved around would get moved around anyway.

“I don’t feel like it’s any different,” Quade said. “They’re just waiting to tell everyone when they get switched around and where they are going to live.”

Instead, she believes the problem lies in the amount of space campus provides for students to choose from.

Henry assured that this delay in room results is not for the school to fill up most expensive dorms first. Legacy Hall, she says, has been a popular pick for students. Also, with the dorm offering its residents a five-meal plan, the cost becomes comparable to that of living in Ferrell on a 10-meal plan.

Factors such as male to female ratio, number of campus commuters and situating students who missed room draw will play a roll once enrollment is figured.

“We don’t want people to have to move again,” Henry reassured. “We will definitely work with students and want them to be comfortable."
